Mitla & El Arbol de Tule

After the Hierve el Agua, we went to the archaeological site of Mitla.
this stuff dates back to 500 AD. the red comes from mercury.
the blocks of stone were cut with water and wood. i don't exactly understand how.
these obelisks are twice this size. they extend below the floor.
they built a drainage system
the walls are all decorated in these geometrical designs. This one is my favorite. The palace of Mitla is surrounded by mountains and was a huge city for everyone passing through. This design symbolizes their journey through the mountains.
This is what is left of their drawings. They repainted images for every quarter. It's all based in 4s - the cardinal directions, periods of life, movement of the sun and moon.

We followed up the ancient city with a trip to a Mezcal factory -- that's right, a liquor factory... Well, for school purposes, we were only there for lunch, but our tour guide was nice enough to show us how it's made.
This is the agave. It's roasted in a pit for a very long time.
Then ground up. Make sure you know that you can't get any ol ass to do this work. Gotta be horse power.

El Arbol de Tule es 2,000 anos old. But they won't let you touch it, so how can I know?
